About this project
I started this project in the summer of 2025. I've been thinking and reading about the Romans ever since I listened to Mike Duncan's The History of Rome podcast back in 2018. Authors like Tom Holland and especially Mary Beard kept me engaged in this world. When I recently picked up the Cicero trilogy by Robert Harris, I came across T. Robert S. Broughton's Magistrates of the Roman Republic (MRR). As I was reading through the copies made available by the Internet Archive, I began to envision a modern update (more in form than in content). Halfway through designing and developing the idea, I discovered the Digital Prosopography of the Roman Republic, which covers similar ground.
Nevertheless, I decided to continue developing this project as a personal research exercise. The aim is to present the magistrates and their careers in a clear and accessible way, and to expand and refine the dataset over time.
This site is a work in progress, and I welcome suggestions or corrections at spqrome753@gmail.com. I hope you enjoy browsing through this directory of Roman magistrates.
