Gaius Scribonius Curio (pr. 54)

Quaestor in 54 BCE

🏛️ Career

  1. 54 BCE
    (aged 31)
    Quaestor

Broughton: No title preserved. May have served in this year and until late in 53 or early in 52 under C. Claudius Pulcher in Asia (a).

Curio is not specifically called a Quaestor in any text, but the evidence for his age, and the date of his tribunate support the conjecture. He did not return to Rome before the autumn of 53, since Cicero attained the augurate in his absence (b).

    (aged 35)
    Tribune of the Plebs

Broughton: Elected in place of Servaeus who had been convicted of bribery in the election (a), he advanced a series of bills: 1. on the Campanian land (b); 2. to annex the kingdom of Juba (c); 3. to restore C. Memmius from exile (d); 4. to reduce luxury when travelling (e); 5. to set himself up as road commissioner for five years (f); and 6. a grain law (g). Bribed by Caesar (h), he used the refusal of his demand for intercalation in the calendar (i) as an excuse to go over publicly to Caesar's support, in active opposition to Pompey and the optimate faction (j).

MT: see also App. BC 2.27 for Curio's demand that both Caesar and Pompey should give up their provinces and armies.
